The Minister of Arts and Culture, Prof Narcisse Mouelle Kombi has opened the third edition of the Yaounde International Book Fair, SILYA.The ceremony that took place at the courtyard of the National Museum this 9th May 2018 saw the Arts and Culture Minister stating that the fair aims at giving visibility to the book sector in Cameroon.He also paid hommage to some renown Cameroonian writers.The representative of writers, Dr Eugene Ebode took his turn to highlight the importance of the book fair.On behalf of colleagues, he made a number of demands as assistance to the stakeholders of the sector.Some eight authors received distinctions during the crowd-pulling event.One of recipients, Prof Tanyi-Tang Anne expressed gratitude to government for the acknowledgement. “I am the one who did the play on the 50th anniversary celebrations in Cameroon. Receiving this award is indicative that the Head of State and Minister of Culture are proud of my work.”The event of this morning was highlighted by a sketch on ‘The Book’ where kids of between 8 to 12 years kept repeating the phrase, “Always read the good ones (books).”Storytelling was also on the agenda to spice up the morning.Some Government Ministers and traditional leaders were present, as if to confirm the role of books in preserving and promoting the history of Cameroon.After the official opening ceremony, the Arts and Culture Minister was led to an exhibition that celebrates some “Leading Figures of Cameroon’s Literature.”This was followed by a guided tour of the exhibition grounds.An Inaugural Conference on the theme of this year’s SILYA, “Books, tool for consolidation of peace and unity” then followed the tour.This third edition of the Yaounde International Book Fair, SILYA has brought together writers, publishers and lovers of books from Cameroon, Africa, Europe, Asia and the Americas.The fair will continue through 13th May 2018.Eleanor Ayuketah
